SCADA

What do you understand by the term SCADA
SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. It refers to a system that collects data from various sensors at a factory, plant or from remote locations and sends data to a remote computer which manages and ditributes the data. Some of the industries where SCADA is used are Water Management Systems, Electric Power, Traffic Signals, Mass Transit Systems, Environmental Control Systems, and Manufacturing Systems.

A SCADA system usually consists of sensors,signal conditioners , controllers, communication networks, user interfaces (HMI), and software. The system gathers data from various sensors which are either in close proximity or off site (sometimes miles away).SCADA can also be seen as a system with many data elements called points. The points can be either hard or soft. A hard data point is typically from a sensor output; a soft point is computed result derived using multiple sensor values. Data elements from hard and soft points are usually recorded continously;

A SCADA system normally include user interface, usually called Human Machine Interface (HMI). The HMI of a SCADA system is where data gets processed and presented to a human operator. HMI usually includes system admistrative controls with which the operator can configure/ control the SCADA system.

Project Report

Many students underestimate the importance of the report and make the mistake of thinking that top marks can be achieved simply for producing a good product. This is fundamentally not the case and many projects have been graded well below their potential because of an indifferent or poor write-up. In order to get your due worth, you should consider that the aim of the project is to produce a good report and that software, hardware, theory etc. that you developed during the project are merely a means to this end. Don't make the mistake of leaving the write-up to the last minute. Ideally you should produce the bulk of the report as you go along and use the last week or two to bring it together into a coherent document.

Things to remember while selecting final year UG projects

Topic should preferably be from one of the current growth area : then placement prospects are better

Purpose of project work is to mould you as a full fledged individual capable of handling a multidisciplinary design and implementation task. This generally involves detailed study , extensive planning, execution, testing and validation. Topic which you choose should allow you to perform all this aspects.

Generally survey projects get only less score, unless findings are supported by experimental results

Project title can be either from own idea or from project guide/ advisor

Project report introduces your case in Job Interviews. So it’s quality should be superb. In most of cases, a bigger report is not considered as best report. Presentations have to be self explanatory ; at the same time brief. In this respect use of pictures are often helpful.

Once you finalize project title, carry out exhaustive literature survey to bring out
Current developments in chosen topic
Alternative methods of implementation
Merits/ demerits in various execution paths
Reason why a particular path is selected

Literature survey and ensuing analysis is essential ingredient of worth while project reports.

Understand clearly the importance of guidance/help you have to get from your guide. Keep him fully aware of all developments at every stage. Meet him at regular intervals and ensure continued help. Project’s success to a certain degree depends on the amount of cooperation you are able to derive from the guide
